Goods Inspection & Safety Procedure
Last updated: May 2026
This procedure explains how donated goods should be checked, sorted, refused, isolated, recycled, disposed of, or escalated where safety or legality concerns arise.
1. Initial check
Goods should be checked for obvious damage, contamination, wetness, mould, sharp edges, leaks, unsafe contents, personal items, documents, restricted goods, electrical items, and anything that appears unlawful or unsuitable.
2. Sorting categories
Items may be sorted into categories such as accepted for reuse/resale, suitable for recycling, unsuitable for disposal/binning, requires further review, or unsafe/suspicious for escalation.
3. Unsafe or illegal items
If an item appears illegal, stolen, counterfeit, dangerous, prohibited, or suspicious, it should not be sold or passed on. It may be isolated where safe, recorded, and reported to appropriate authorities where necessary.
4. Rejected goods
Goods that are broken, contaminated, unhygienic, incomplete, unsafe, not practical to process, or outside accepted categories may be refused, recycled, disposed of, or binned at the Foundation’s discretion.
5. Personal items and documents
Where personal documents, keys, bank cards, medication, money, or valuables are found, staff or volunteers should escalate the matter internally so a responsible decision can be made. The Foundation cannot guarantee return after items have been processed.
